Sunday Lunch at Cuvée

Just a short drive from the center of Stellenbosch you’ll reach the family owned Simonsig wine estate established in 1968.

I mostly know Simonsig for their award-winning wines, we even selected their “Kaapse Vonkel” – Méthode Cap Classique to serve at our wedding almost three years ago.

Today I am visiting the restaurant on Simonsig Estate, Cuvée, for a Sunday Lunch spot.
I am fond of the name Cuvée – a French word that describes a blend of wine especially champagne.
As Simonsig is well-known for their “Kaapse Vonkel” MCC the name Cuvée is more than appropriate.
I found an interesting piece of trivia on their website that for me also contributes to the name Cuvée, “Frans Malan, the founder of Simonsig, was the first producer of Méthode Champenoise in South Africa, when he pioneered Cap Classique in 1971.”

When you enter the restaurant, you will be welcomed into a warm venue with contemporary styling but has strong old Cape Dutch influences.

The service was outstanding and what you expect from a restaurant on a renowned estate.

When in Stellenbosch you are deep in wine country and you simply need to order wine, as it was not a cold day I was more in the mood for a white wine.
I am a Sauvignon Blanc enthusiast, and Simonsig 2018 Sunbird lived up to what I have come to expect of good Stellenbosch wines and is quite affordable. I do recommend you try this if you are looking for a crisp well-balanced wine to enjoy on a Sunday afternoon.

Throughout the menu you will find the strong South African flavours that will bring a smile to your face. I had the “butchers cut of the day”, that was a 200g sirloin served with rainbow Carrots, crispy potatoes and grilled baby leeks, this will please any person that is fond of meat and it was well presented. To compliment my main meal, I ordered a mushroom sauce. For me this was possibly the best mushroom sauce I have had in a long time as it was not simply a cream sauce with a bit of mushroom but a grey sauce that almost resembled a purée.

To top it all I just had to have the Chocolate Fondant dessert, which was the perfect way to finish off the experience.

For families that are looking for lunch spots in the winelands, Cuvée has a kiddies’ menu and play areas outside.

When you are visiting Cuvée, what you are looking for is a comforting venue to have a meal with family and a stunning view and with the spoils that you would expect from a Stellenbosch view.
